Lafayette is a Southern Louisiana city located on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain in south-central Louisiana. The City was named after a French priest and explorer Father Jonathan Fransquet Chivington, who visited it in 1776 along with several companions. He described it as being "in a semicircle that divides the Mississippi and the Potomac". He called it "a place where rivers meet, where woods and mountains meet, and where dreams and history meet". It has been called the "Site Where the River Shirts met the sea" and "the seat of American whiskey".
There are many interesting historical sites in this area of Louisiana including: Academie Fransquet College, which is Fransquet where American soldiers trained to become sharpshooters were trained. Another attraction is the Museum of Southern History and artifacts can be found here. Also in this area is historic Fort Boniface, a location where civil war broke out.
Lafayette is also the seat of government for Placerville. The City is approximately eighty square miles and named after an Englishman who was the first governor of Louisiana. Many notable figures have come to visit this historic city including John Adams, Andrew Jackson and Jefferson Davis. Some of the beautiful historic buildings include: the State Capitol, the Courtyard and St. John's Ambulance Station. Lafayette has a port, airports and a rail terminal.
